Waterton Park Hotel & Spa Wakefield Review

My partner Alfie booked me a surprise spa getaway for my 30th birthday at Waterton Park Hotel & Spa, Wakefield through SpaSeekers, and wow, what a fairytale escape! I had NO idea that this place existed and as you know, I’m quite familiar with spas! Waterton Park Hotel & Spa is based in Wakefield and it’s a really beautiful drive from Sheffield, it took us under 40 minutes. Alfie booked via SpaSeekers as that’s always been my chosen way to book spa visits as I really think you get great value for money.

I don’t think the price was bad either, at the Waterton Park Hotel & Spa you can stay over, enjoy 3 hour spa access, a 50-minute massage, £30 per person towards dinner and breakfast in the next morning for just £117.50 each, I mean at some spas that’s how much you’d be spending just on a massage!

First Impressions

From the moment we arrived, we knew we were in for something special. Waterton Park Hotel is like stepping into a storybook. Just outside the charming village of Walton and four miles from Wakefield, this Georgian mansion sits proudly on its own little island in the middle of a lake. Seriously, how romantic is that? When I saw the photos I couldn’t believe my eyes!

We started by dropping our bags at the mainland hotel and crossing the dreamy, lit-up-at-night footbridge to Walton Hall. The setting is pure magic. But, full disclosure, we were a bit confused about where to go for the spa. The main reception wasn’t staffed, so a lovely guest pointed us to the bar area where the spa’s reception was tucked away. Not the smoothest start, but we were too enchanted by the setting to mind at all!

Accessibility

If you’re planning a visit, it’s good to know that Waterton Park isn’t wheelchair-friendly. There are steps, uneven paths, and no step-free routes. That said, if you have lower mobility and can manage with a few breaks, it’s still worth considering, the views and experience are that good.

The Spa

Let’s talk about the Waterton Park Spa. The Bazaar Spa is packed with features: an indoor pool right by the lake, a spa bath, sauna, steam room, and four treatment rooms offering Elemis treatments.. And the pièce de résistance? The outdoor hot tubs! There’s nothing like soaking in warm bubbles with birdsong and lake views all around.

We had three hours of spa time included in our package, and trust me, it was pure bliss. We’ve been swimming a lot this year so we just decided to sit in the outdoor hot tubs with a very expensive drink. The weather was utter perfection and we walked all the birds and ducks on the lake. The three hours flew by and soon we were heading off to our massages. The 50-minute massage was everything we hoped for and more. We both left feeling completely pampered and relaxed with hot stone massages to ease our bodies.

The Hotel

The Waterton Park Hotel is across two building, one on the mainland and the older building on the Island. Usually the Island is for wedding parties to add that extra magical touch but as we were celebrating my 30th birthday, they upgraded us to a huge room on the top floor. This did mean two flights of stairs but if you’ve ever been in an old manor home before you’ll know they’re much easier than normal modern stairs.

With my chronic back pain I did think about asking to change to a more disabled-friendly room but at the same time I had seen photos of the huge freestanding baths and I had brought some fancy bath products, so I thought we’d check it out and decide after. By the time we had got upstairs, we definitely weren’t heading back down anytime soon!

The room was huge with a seating area, 4 poster bed, huge freestanding bath tub and separate shower with beautiful views across the lake and over to the main hotel area across the bridge. Although my partner is used to much more modern rooms it was definitely an interesting stay despite the floorboards creaking if you whispered across them. We actually slept really well but I do think if we return we’d ask to stay in the newer building with the lifts.

Dining

Dinner at the Grand Café was really lovely, it’s in such a nice setting, and our £30 credit per person covered some truly delicious comfort food, we actually had a few pounds left to spend which was surprising. The food wasn’t incredible but it also wasn’t anything to complain about, there is nothing nearby so if you like a snack before bed, I’d recommend taking something for your room!

Exploring the Area

You’re more than welcome to walk the grounds and there are recommended walking paths too, plus it’s actually surrounded by a really impressive golf course if that’s your thing! The drive in via the village of Walton is really beautiful too and there looks like some lovely places to try for lunch. For fellow content creators it’s a dream for shooting too! As it was already dark I just took some outfit photos inside the hotel on the Island but on a good day there’s plenty of opportunities.

Overall Experience

Waterton Park Hotel & Spa is the perfect blend of romance, relaxation, and history. While it’s not ideal for those needing step-free access, it’s an absolute dream for anyone else. The gorgeous setting really made our stay unforgettable.
