Dyson Fans vs Portable Aircon Units: Which Actually Cools a Room? (2026 Guide)

Updated for June 2026

Over the years I’ve actually spent thousands on fans, including Dyson fans. As a disabled blogger living with chronic pain, a UK heatwave is not just uncomfortable for me, it is genuinely unmanageable.

The number one question I get, does Dyson make an air conditioner? No.

I have owned the Dyson Hot + Cool, various Dyson cooling fans, and eventually switched to a proper portable air conditioning unit. I am writing this to save you the money and the sweat I went through getting here.

The short answer: if you want to actually cool a room down, you need a portable aircon unit with a hose that goes out of a window or door. Nothing else will do it.

If you are searching for a Dyson air conditioner, or wondering whether Dyson fans actually cool the air, this post is going to save you a lot of money.

The 2026 Quick Verdict

  • Dyson Fans: Brilliant for air purification and sleek design. They are not air conditioners. They do not lower room temperature.

  • Air Coolers (Water/Ice): Often sold as “Dyson air coolers”, these are a waste of money in humid UK summers.

  • Portable Aircon: The only thing that will actually drop your room from 28°C to 16°C.

If you actually want to lower the temperature of a room, you need an aircon unit with a hose that goes out a window or door. Dyson fans? Lovely for the winter. Nice to look at. But in a heatwave? They’re not going to save you.

Does Dyson Make an Air Conditioner?

Every year, thousands of people search for a Dyson air conditioner or a Dyson air conditioning unit. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Dyson Air Conditioners do not exist.

When you see a Dyson cooling fan or Dyson ventilator, it is a high-tech air circulator. It uses “Air Multiplier” technology to create a smooth, powerful breeze. It feels amazing on your skin, but the thermometer on your wall will not change.

Why I still recommend Dyson fans (for the right reasons): I use my Dyson Hot + Cool with HEPA filtration every day for my asthma. If you want a Dyson fan for allergies or a light breeze while you sleep, it is worth it. But if you want to stop your bedroom from being a sauna, keep reading.

The reason comes down to how they are built. A real air conditioner has a compressor and uses refrigerant to pull heat out of the air, exactly like your fridge. Dyson fans and purifiers have neither. Some heat, some filter, and they are brilliant bits of kit for what they actually do, but none of them will bring the temperature of a room down on a hot day.

What about a “Dyson air cooler”?

If you have seen a product described as a Dyson air cooler, it is almost always a third-party seller mislabelling a Dyson fan to catch the search term. It is not something Dyson makes or endorses. The only way to actually air condition a room is with a unit that has a compressor and a hose, and Dyson does not make one. If that ever changes I will update this post, but for now, if you want cool air, you need to look elsewhere.

Dyson Fans

Do Dyson Fans Cool a Room?

This is one of the most common questions people ask. Dyson fans look high-tech, they feel powerful, and they have features like air purification and heating. But even the Dyson Pure Cool, Dyson Hot + Cool, and Dyson Purifier Cool do not cool the room temperature.

They move air. They can filter the air. Some models can heat a room in winter. But they do not bring the temperature down during summer heatwaves.

That said, I still love my Dyson Hot + Cool with HEPA filtration. It’s great for allergy season, especially with asthma and hay fever in the household. I would recommend it for everything but actual cooling.

Dyson Fan vs Air Conditioner: The 2026 Comparison

Feature Dyson Cooling Fan Portable Aircon Unit
Actually Cools Air No (Circulates) Yes (Refrigerates)
Running Cost (2026) ~2p to 5p per hour ~25p to 35p per hour
Setup Plug and Play Needs Window Hose
Noise Level Very Quiet Moderate (White Noise)
Best For Allergies / Year-round UK Heatwaves / Sleep

Are Dyson fans worth it? For air purification and winter heating, yes. For a 30-degree August afternoon? No.

Why Air Coolers and Mist Fans Fail

You will also see standalone evaporative coolers, the ones with a water tank or a slot for ice. They are a different thing again, and in the UK they are usually a waste of money. Adding moisture to already humid British heat just makes the room feel swampy and sticky rather than cool. I have tried them twice and regretted it both times. Unless you are sitting two inches from the thing, it will not make any real difference.

What Actually Works: Portable Aircon Units

To actually lower the temperature, you need a unit with a compressor and a hose. I use the Princess 9K Air Conditioning Unit.

  • True Cooling: It takes the heat out of the air and pumps it out of the window.

  • Chronic Pain Relief: For my disability, being able to control the climate is a medical necessity.

  • The Cat Factor: Since I have indoor cats, I place my unit on a sturdy box so the hose reaches a high window, keeping them safe while the room stays at a blissfully cold 16 degrees.

Pros of a portable aircon unit

  • Cools the room properly by lowering the temperature

  • Some models offer fan and dehumidifier functions

  • Good white noise for sleeping

  • Portable and easy to move between rooms

  • Can be used year-round

Cons

  • Costs more upfront and to run

  • Noisier than a standard fan

  • Requires a hose out of a window or door

  • Takes up more space

  • Some units are heavy and require emptying the water tank more often than you might expect

A note on emptying the water tank: This is completely normal and not a fault. When the unit cools a humid room rapidly it pulls moisture out of the air, and that has to go somewhere. The more humid the room, the more water you will see, and UK summers can be surprisingly humid. Do not be alarmed if your unit fills up quickly in the first few days. Once the room reaches your target temperature, it settles down significantly. In standard cooling mode most condensation drains out through the hose, but in dehumidifier mode the tank will need emptying more regularly.

Setting Up the Aircon Window Hose: It Is Easier Than You Think

This is the bit that puts a lot of people off and honestly it should not. Setting up the hose is as simple as opening a window and poking the hose out of it.

Most portable aircon units come with a flat plastic panel that sits in the gap around the hose, keeping the window mostly closed and blocking draughts. Mine has a small rectangular plastic surround that does the job perfectly. It also means my indoor cats cannot squeeze out, which was a genuine concern.

If you want a more secure or permanent setup, you can buy a proper sealing kit. These use velcro and zip around the hose to create a much tighter seal. They work really well and are easy to install. The only thing to bear in mind is that you will need a good sticky remover to take it off cleanly when you move, whether that is a rental or a property you are selling. Something like Goo Gone or a citrus-based adhesive remover will do the trick without damaging the paintwork.

My honest advice: start with the panel that comes in the box. It is good enough for most windows and you can always upgrade to a sealing kit later if you want a neater finish.

How to Choose the Right Air Conditioner

When buying an aircon unit, don’t go for the cheapest option. Here are some key things to look for:

Room size compatibility
Make sure the unit can handle your room’s size. I would always recommend choosing a model that can cool a slightly larger space than you have.

BTU rating

This is the unit’s cooling power. The higher the BTU, the more space it can cool. As a rough guide:

Up to 9,000 BTU: suitable for a small single bedroom (up to around 10 square metres).

9,000 to 12,000 BTU: suitable for an average UK double bedroom, which is typically around 12 to 13 square metres.

12,000 BTU and above: better for larger rooms, open plan spaces or if you want to cool a room faster and more efficiently.

My top tip is always to buy for a room slightly bigger than yours. If your bedroom is 12 square metres, get a unit rated for 15 to 20 square metres. It will cool the room faster and work less hard to maintain the temperature, which is kinder on your electricity bill too.

Smart features
If you want to control it from your phone or via voice assistants, look for models with WiFi or smart controls. I wish I had.

Hose length and placement
Don’t worry too much about this, with a box underneath you can reach a top window, or just grab a longer hose from Amazon!

Energy efficiency
Aircon units use more energy than fans, so compare ratings if running costs are a concern.

Am I happy with our aircon Unit?

Extremely but in hindsight, I would have picked a smart aircon unit with wifi that can be powered from my phone just for ease and because I’m disabled. I would also have spent more money to buy one that can cool a larger room just so we could use it to cool the hallway too. My Princess Aircon Unit cools a room 22m² but for a quick look, you can get one for £140 that can cool a 80m² room.

So my number 1 tip would be to buy an aircon unit that will cool a room bigger than yours, that way you’ll avoid any disappointment!

Where to Buy Portable Aircon Units

There are lots of places to buy aircon units online, but I always recommend:

  • Amazon – for ease of returns and delivery

  • PriceSpy – to compare prices across retailers

  • TopCashback and Airtime Rewards – for added savings (use my referral code: V9PYQ8WE)

My Honest Verdict

If you just want a fan that looks good and filters the air, Dyson is a great option. But if you are looking to actually cool your room down, especially during UK heatwaves, only a proper aircon unit will do the job. While the aircon cools the room, I also rely on these plus-size summer dresses for staying cool when I have to leave the house.

I still use my Dyson fan in spring and autumn, and I still recommend it for allergies and general use. But in July and August, it’s the aircon unit that saves the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

CLICK HERE TO SEE MY TOP 2026 AIRCON PICKS ON AMAZON

Does Dyson Make an Air Conditioner?

No. Dyson has never made an Air Conditioner. Dyson has different fans that are called Hot & Cold, but they do not cool the air.

Do Dyson fans cool the air?

No. They circulate the air. They help moisture evaporate from your skin, which makes you feel cooler, but they do not reduce the room temperature.

What is the best way to cool a room in summer?

Use a portable aircon unit with a hose that vents out a window. Fans and air coolers are only effective for airflow, not temperature reduction.

Dyson cool vs air conditioner: which is quieter?

Dyson is much quieter. A portable AC has a compressor (like a fridge), which creates a hum. Most people find it is great “white noise” for sleeping, but it is louder than a fan.

Can I use a portable aircon unit all year round?

Yes. Many units also offer fan and dehumidifier settings, making them useful in every season.

Can I get a Dyson ac unit for my flat?

No, because they do not exist! You are better off buying a dedicated portable air conditioning unit like a Meaco or Princess and using a Dyson cool fan for air purification on the side.

Is it worth getting a smart aircon unit?

Yes. If you have mobility issues or want the convenience of remote control, look for a model with WiFi or app control.
