Scarlet Darkness Plus Size Review

If you have been following me for a while, you know I have a massive soft spot for fashion that feels like it has stepped out of a storybook. Whether it is the drama or the whimsical feel of a historical style, it always feels so much more personal than high street trends. Recently, I got to finally try out Scarlet Darkness, a brand that has been all over my social media feed lately!

Founded in 2018, Scarlet Darkness describes itself as a brand committed to delivering high-quality fashion rooted in historical and cultural heritage. They cater to independent, creative women who want to embrace gothic, steampunk, and vintage aesthetics. With over 105,000 followers on Instagram, they are clearly doing something right in the alternative fashion community.

One of the biggest questions I always have when trying a new brand is the fit, especially when it comes to “alternative” or “boutique” styles which can often be a bit restrictive. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they have an extended size range. Most of their pieces go up to a UK 22, but they do have a selection that goes up to a 3X, which is roughly a UK 24.

Finding the Perfect Fit

For my order, I opted for the XL, which is listed as a UK 20. Now, for transparency on sizing, I am currently between a UK 18 and a 20 in most mainstream brands. Looking at the Scarlet Darkness size chart, I did notice that their measurements seem to run a little bit small. Having tried the clothes on, I would definitely recommend sizing up if you are between sizes or if you prefer a bit of breathing room. The XL fits me well, but it is a snug, structured fit.

The Renaissance Off-Shoulder Pocket Dress

The first item I picked out was the Renaissance Off-Shoulder Pocket Chiffon Dress. I chose this in the XL and I have to say, the teal colour is absolutely stunning. It is deep, rich, and feels so lovely to wear.

The chiffon is light and airy, making it perfect for events or even just a fancy day out. The off-shoulder neckline is very flattering, and it gives off that perfect “maiden in the woods” vibe. The fit is really lovely and it creates a beautiful silhouette without feeling too heavy.

The Victorian Chiffon Midi Dress

The second piece I chose was the Victorian Chiffon Pleated Midi Pocket Dress. This one feels a bit more modern than a Renaissance dress. It has a beautiful pleated detail that makes it look incredibly sophisticated.

It’s a really pretty dress and it’ll be perfect in the summer heat!

Why a Faux Corset is a Game Changer

I have definitely had my eye on their standalone corset tops. I have seen them styled all over Instagram and they look incredible. However, because I live with chronic back pain, I have to be very careful about what I wear around my midsection. Actual corsetry can sometimes be a bit too much for my back to handle for a full day. I’ve even gone off wired bras for that reason!

This is why I love that Scarlet Darkness incorporates the “corset look” into so many of their dresses. You get that laced-up, cinched aesthetic without the rigid boning that can cause discomfort. It is a great way to get the gothic or renaissance look while staying comfortable enough to actually enjoy your day.

Because Scarlet Darkness is a global brand, I was prepared to wait a few weeks for my package to arrive in the UK. However, the shipping was actually much quicker than I expected. It is always a relief when an international order arrives ahead of schedule.

If you want to keep up with their latest drops and see how others are styling these pieces, you can follow them here.

Overall, I am really impressed and loved seeing them offer up to a UK 24, hopefully they’ll go higher one day! The quality is there, the colours are vibrant, and the designs are unique. I really like the brand and I would definitely buy more from them in the future. If you are looking to add a bit of romantic drama to your wardrobe, they are well worth a look. Just remember to check those size charts and consider sizing up for the best fit!
