Avoiding and Treating Mosquito Bites
Ever since we started going on yearly family holidays again, my mum has suffered so badly at the hands of the evil southern Spanish mosquitos. They have tormented, waited for her to get off the plane, and had an all you can eat buffet. These evil mosquitos have attacked as early as on the first day. It has resulted in permanents scars across my mum’s body, including a patch on her arm that flares up when she had been bitten on holidays after that. There have even been two A&E trips whilst still on holiday and several visits to the chemist to buy every product available. Unfortunately, once they’ve sunk their sharp-tipped mouth in, nothing prevents more attacks.
This year, we were having no more of it! I called in for all the best mosquito products for avoiding and treating mosquito bites. I then spent a small fortune on plugs from Amazon. I won’t lie and say that we found one miracle product, mainly because we took several, it was definitely a combination and I imagine everyone will need a different combination.
Plugs Everywhere
The plugs were absolutely fantastic, my mum and dad usually get bitten a lot throughout the night so we decided that no windows should ever be opened. Of course, we had aircon! Instead, we kept them closed and plugged in a combination of Mosquito Insect Repellent liquid plugs throughout the entire place, and Ultrasonic plugs. We did not see a single fly or bug inside and we would definitely buy and do this again for future holidays.
Spray Spray Spray
You want to be using insect repellant sprays as often as you can. On bedding before bed, on clothes before going out, and my mum even sprayed her body before getting dressed too. We have used the Incognito Insect Repellant Spray (£10.99) before but we didn’t notice much after my mum had already been bitten. The Suncream & Insect Repellent SPF30 (£12.99) is absolutely fantastic and such a brilliant idea! My mum used this a lot and usually, she gets several bits on her arms, this year she had none.
Africology Citronella Spray/Insect Repellent (50ml/£10)
If you want to support a natural, cruelty-free, hand-man and ethically sourced brand, then look no further than Africology! This is a very strong citronella spray that smells great and mosquitos hate it!
Vie Spray-On Anti Mosquito £7.95
This was definitely my mum’s favourite spray this year. It’s all-natural and completely safe, meaning you can spray it near babies too! It has menthane and coconut oil, which is probably why my mum kept saying how soft her skin felt too!
Keep Away
Mosquito Repellent Wrist Band – £4.99
The key really does seem to be preventing bites from the second you land. Don’t wait until you’re bitten to start using your products. This wrist band lasts for up to 2 weeks and comes in a re-sealable bag to increase its lifespan and efficiency. This silicone band contains 30% Citriodiol. Although nothing happens if you press it, whenever we were out and mum could see mosquitos or flies, she would press it and feel better!
Mosquitan Mosquito Patches – £8.95
These are super clever patches that let out essential oils once you squeeze to activate them. They last for 4-6 hours at a time and you can attach them onto bedding, furniture, clothing and anything you want! They’re so easy to use and you get 24 in a packet which is quite a lot! We stuck one onto the side of my mum’s bed throughout our stay and on the inside of her clothes too.
Treating Mosquito Bites
Bug Balm £7.95
Okay, you’ve been bitten. Now you have to act fast, especially if you react to bites the way my mum does. Obviously, you can try icing it whilst you’re out and without your treatments, but ideally you should keep these things on you just in case. Bug Balm contains concentrated liquorice root which helps with the swelling and irritation that comes with bites. There are no side effects and it’s completely safe so you can use as much as you need!
APIT patch – £72.80
In my mum’s case, mosquito bites cause a lot of pain. Pain that means she can’t enjoy the rest of her holiday so I was really excited to get my hands on the AOIT Patch. This is a super impressive patch from i9living. With my mum not being bitten, we didn’t get the chance to try these out on an actual bite, but they can be used for chronic pains, joint problems, and injuries too. How they work is down to Apitherapy which is a science about bees and how their venom can be used to help. It’s not something that I’ve heard of before but I’m willing to try it out! They say that there is no danger of anaphylactic shock because it doesn’t contain the side effects of a bee sting, just the parts that help with pains.
Zap-It! £5.95
I don’t want to say I saved the best until last but Zap-It! Really is incredible. This tiny device stopped my mum’s bites from getting to hospital-trip-level last year and I cannot recommend it enough. It works by clicking the device onto the bite and it generates an extremely low electrical impulse. They work to reduce the histamine flow and help stimulate your body to flush out the toxins. Not only does it stop the itching but it should stop the bite from getting any bigger too. It can be used SO many times and is so affordable to buy.
