I love storage. From a big bookcase to a well decorated box to put blankets away in, I love knowing that everywhere has a place in my home. If you are starting to feel like clutter and mess is building up around you, you need to take another look at the storage in your home and see if it is still working for you. Here are my top tips to revamp your storage at home.
Keep your kitchen countertops clear
Cluttered kitchen countertops is one of my pet hates, but I have so many kitchen appliances – as well as things like mug trees, knife stands etc – that makes me feel like I am constantly moving things around to make room for actual chopping and serving. My advice is to wall mount as much as possible. I use a magnetic knife rack on my wall, and hooks under my cabinets to hang cups from. Another option is a vertical rack at the side of the kitchen where you can have all of your appliances on display and then only take things out as and when you need them.
Secure your medication
I tend to keep all of my medication in one place and dip into it when I need it, but actually your medication deserves good storage too! Go for something pretty and rainbow to organise your main medication so that you want to keep looking back to it, and then secure the rest of your medication somewhere safe, for example using something like a Hempak, which is child resistant and should keep the bulk of your medication safely away from any children.
Go floor to ceiling
Shelving units tend to go to about 6ft tall as standard, and then there is always an awkward gap of varying heights depending how high your ceilings are, between the top of your bookshelf and your ceiling. Instead of going for a typically sized bookshelf, measure your wall height and try to find something that matches as close to possible. This gives you additional shelving space, which is useful for offering more storage, but also gives you an option of creating the ‘built-in’ look that is really popular in shelving right now.
Use Ottoman style furniture
Most people have heard of an Ottoman – a small bench that opens up to become a storage box, which is great for storing things like cushions and blankets. I like to get as much of my furniture as possible ‘Ottoman style’ – from my bed, to my coffee table, to all of the seating in my home. This means that all of the space that is taken up in my home by furniture, doubles up as places to put things into storage and remove clutter from around the house.
