It’s rather awkward when you’re invited into store to try on dresses and pick one to take home with you, and you don’t actually like any. Gosh, I don’t sugar coat things do I? I’ve always found Simply Be amazing to shop at online as it has so much choice, and having the pop up store at Meadowhall makes me so happy. But with so much choice online, it does mean that the store can sometimes be hit and miss as they can only stock so much. More often than not, I do come away with my next favourite outfit, but this time, I was beyond underwhelmed.
I took along my friend, Shirelle, so that she could give me her opinions and make me try new things, including denim. We did try our hardest to find the perfect outfit for me, but it ended up in many ‘mehs’ rather than ‘ohhhs’. The first dress I tried on was this Denim Babydoll Dress and although it was rather beautiful on the hanger, and in a style I love, the design was a little off in places and the sizing confused me. It was far too big and needed a belt, too high but then tight at the top, whilst gaping at the waist. On photos, thanks to my posing and belt, it looks quite nice but I couldn’t wear it out, I would be adjusting myself too much.
Next we tried this spotted dress, but we just weren’t feeling it, as it did nothing for my figure. Sure, it doesn’t look bad, we just were not blown away. We thought it worked much better as a top but we couldn’t find the right skirt. AX Paris (AX Curve) normally don’t do seperates so I was quite surprised to see a skirt, and with it being from such an amazing brand, I needed to try it. Unfortunately, the skirt was rather long, heavy, tight fitting and overall, underwhelming. The butterflies did make me laugh, as it’s a common stereotype of plus size clothes to have butterflies, but these were a little more sophisticated than usual, thankfully anyway. I love AX Curve but I definitely think they’ve brought out a lot better designs than this.
Now it’s time for Kelly Brook, and as you can imagine, it’s pretty much the same verdict. I can pretty much look at an item of clothing and immediately know if it is definitely not going to work on me, this is how I feel with pretty much 99% of her collection for SS15. Meadowhall didn’t stock the entire collection, but they did have a good selection of it to suit most people. I narrowed my choices down to this blue pencil dress and an aztec puffy dress.
I think my face says it all for the blue dress. The peplum did nothing except make me feel like I had gills and I was really concerned as to why my modesty was nearly on show? Back splits are fine and pretty much normal, but a front split? I’m 5’3 and I was seriously a couple inches away from having far too much on show, even with leggings on, I felt rather uncomfortable, but it did provide a lot of laughs. Being a blue girl, I absolutely love the colour and the pattern was beautiful. Overall, the fit was spot on for a 20, but we did debate over the split being a manufacturing fault until we checked the other dresses….
I’ll be perfectly honest, on this visit if I was just shopping of my own desires, I would have gone home and bought some of the amazing options online (such as this leopard print number that I am seconds away from ordering), but as it was for the blog, I tried something different. Shirelle loves anything bold in print and wanted to get me in the jacquard skater dress, which surprised us both. I absolutely loved the fitting on my arms and waist, which is normally where I struggle for a good fit. However, with my 38GG/40F chest, there was a lot of gaping room on my neck that I didn’t quite understand and with my hips, I puffed the dress out a lot more than I would have liked to, not because it made me look ‘bigger’ but it simply made me look a little off balanced…
Nevertheless, I ended up taking this Kelly Brook dress and I have wore it out since, it’s a rather comfortable wear but I’d definitely not going to become a favourite outfit anytime soon. No doubt the next time I go into Simply Be Meadowhall it’ll be rammed with everything I love and my bank account will hate me! Finger’s crossed the store, which was originally only meant to be staying until Christmas, becomes permanent so I have plenty more chances to try new styles and prints as that was probably my favourite part!
