Silly Old Sea Dog 1950’s Style Glamorous Ladies Dress with Sleeves

After seeing so many photos of women of all sizes in these beautiful vintage, puffy dresses, I did start to ask myself why on earth I still didn’t own a petticoat…. A week or two later, the Fashion Gods clearly heard me as I received an email from Silly Old Sea Dog asking if I wanted to review a dress, and when it arrived, it just so happened to come with my first proper petticoat! Obviously I’m always really excited over parcels anyway, but if you send over an amazingly, girly and vintage style dress with extra puff to go with it, you’ve won me over already.

Well, that’s a slightly exaggeration, of course I can be blinded by pretty things, but they do actually have to look good on as well. Thankfully, and judging by the comments flooding in from a teaser post on my Facebook page, it’s a big hit all around. When I picked this Silly Old Sea Dog 1950’s Style Glamorous Ladies Dress with Sleeves to review, I was told it’s a really true to fit dress and I don’t need to size up at all and I can completely agree. The arms are a really comfortable fit despite the material not being stretchy at all, and the bust is comfortable enough so that the material may look a little stretched, but it’s actually just sitting there rather nicely.
The only problem I did have with the fit is that the torso is really long, despite my boobs filling most of it, and the 20 was super generous on my waist. Granted, that is my smallest part but usually I still fill out 20s a lot better than this one, which is probably why my belt went a little wonky on some as I think it was slipping trying to keep the extra material in. With a better belt and maybe even a slight alteration, I would definitely agree that this is spot on sizing, but my torso is rather short so I can’t blame the dress. This Glamourous Ladies Dress is 100% cotton and comes in sizes 6-24 with the skirt length usually coming up below the knee. On 5’3 me, it was definitely mid to the bottom part of my calf, so anyone taller than me will be absolutely fine in this dress to get that vintage length too. The vintage inspired pattern really captured my attention as at first, I thought they were princesses and now I call it my princess dress! There is a zip at the back of the dress but I found that I didn’t need to use it at all. From sizes 6-16 the dress is £105 and for 18-24 it’s £115. I know not everyone agrees with paying more for bigger sizes, but with smaller brands and boutiques, I do have to put my business head on and realise it is more material and they will lose out on profit if they don’t charge more…

Apparently the dress is tumble dryer safe, but at over £100 I think it’s safe to say I’m not going to test that one out at all! I believe the petticoat Silly Old Sea Dog sent along with the dress is the White Long Petticoat at £25 in an L/XL which is a size 18+. To me, it feels like a high quality petticoat but I can only compare it with a failed ebay buy many years ago, either way, it does the job and it is a fantastic price.

A little picture heavy but I like the dress and how I look in it, so I will be a little vain. As always lately, photos are by my Alfie.

  • I’ve been coveting a Silly Old Sea Dog dress since I first discovered the brand through Crown and Glory, and this post has not helped the feeling that there is something missing from my life – you look incredible!

Bit sad to hear that there’s no stretch in it though, that normally spells trouble for me and dresses particularly when shopping online.
