I will try any shampoo and conditioner for red hair but when it comes to actual permanent dyes, I’m a little reluctant. Well, that’s a lie, I am seriously reluctant. Often permanent colours will turn my hair brown even if they are meant to be bright red, which obviously makes no sense at all in any reality. So, I did have a lot of questions to make sure Schwarzkopf Live Color XXL Radiant Red would actually work and match up to my usual red. Or at least, match up well enough for me to be able to put my usual colour (Crazy Colour
) back on top of it.
I say this because it’s a fancy ‘Hi-Definition Luminance’ colour, which should look vibrant even on dark hair as it works by lightening it first. I thought it’d be perfect for my dark roots to even everything out and allow me to not have to bleach my roots. Obviously it was cleverly developed to help with the process of going from light to dark on your hair, as we all know, it can be quite a long and harsh event. As you can see clearly from the photos, my roots were really, really dark and noticeable at one point (I actually didn’t know they were this bad). The photo isn’t amazing but if you imagine all my roots were at the darkest on the photo, then you know the how much they needed lightening.
I reluctantly applied two boxes of the dye all over my roots first and then quickly to my ends, simply to ensure I got the same colour all over. After 30ish minutes, I washed it off to reveal…..red roots! It had worked, but as I feared, it did also make my hair quite dark at the same time. Still red, and a strong red tint in fact, but not the colour I had worked so hard to get so I did have to put on a bottle or two of Crazy Colour Vermillion Red to get my hair back to it’s normal self.
If you’re trying to get red hair from a darker colour then this is the perfect base to do that. It will allow your hair to become lighter and give it the red tones that you’ll need to start building your colour up, unless of course, you’re just wanting a little tint to your hair. I’ve used XXL in the past and they’ve never impressed me as much as the Luminance range, plus they’re under £6 a box! Not only was my hair lighter, but it was in an amazing condition, had so much shine and life to it and felt utterly amazing. It was the perfect base to add my usual red and know that I didn’t have nearly black roots!Have you tried XXL colours before? What did you think?
